He decidido crear este blog al momento de recomenzar con mis actividades motociclisticas luego de una pausa de 22 años. Tratare de de publicarlo como bilingue Español/Ingles, ya que muchos colegas motociclistas en Europa no son hispanoparlantes. Comenzare con una reseña del viaje que mi hijo y yo acabamos de hacer hasta el norte de Escocia, e ire añadiendo recuerdos del pasado y futuros viajes a medida que vayan teniendo lugar.
Esta
historia comienza en una galaxia lejana hace mucho, mucho tiempo. Alla
no habian computadores personales, ni telefonos celulares, ni internet,
no se habia nunca escuchado hablar de SIDA, la poblacion de Venezuela
era inferior a 14 millones de habitantes y habian calles en buen estado
por las cuales podian transitar grupos de amigos motorizados que hacian
paseos a sitios como Merida, bahia de Cata y los valles del Tuy.
Acababan de llegar al mercado las BMW R100RS, de las cuales una fue
fabricada en noviembre de 1977 y adquirida por el suscrito a Motolandia
en enero de 1978. Cuando me fui como becario de la Fundacion Ayacucho a
los Estados Unidos en Mayo de 1978, me lleve conmigo mis buenos
recuerdos, mis ilusiones para el futuro y mi R100RS.
He utilizado el termino "Motofuerer" que en idioma Luxemburgues quiere decir "conductor de motocicleta" y "Stuff" que no corresponde en absoluto al termino "stuff" en Ingles sino que se refiere a una pieza de habitacion que se pudiera describir como el cuarto principal. Es una palabra que proviene del Aleman "Stube" y la "u" se pronuncia igual que en Español. Tradicionalmente en Luxemburgo, cada publo tiene su Stuff que es como el bar local donde viene la gente del vecindario a tomar un trago y charlar. El pueblo donde habito se llama Bartreng, asi que el bar local es el "Bartrenger Stuff". Como este blog es un sitio de reunion para los amantes de viajes en motocicleta, me ha parecido logico llamarlo "Motofuerer Stuff".
I have used the expression "Motofuerer" which means "motorcycle rider" in Luxembourgish and "Stuff", which does not correspond at all to the English word "stuff" but is rather pronounced as "stoof" and means a sort of family room or meeting place. The word originates from the German "Stube". Traditionally in Luxembourg each town has its local bar, named as the town's Stuff, where the locals congregate to share a drink and conversation. The town where I live is called Bartreng, so the local bar is the "Bartrenger Stuff". Therefore, since this blog is a meeting room for enthusiasts of motorcicle riding and travelling, it appeared logical to name it "Motofuerer Stuff".

I have decided to create this blog at the time of restarting to ride motorcycles after a 22-year pause. I will attempt to publish it as bilingual English/Spanish since many European friend riders do not speak Spanish. The blog will start with a summary of the trip that my son and I just did to the north of Scotland and will add memories from the past and future trips as they take place.
This
story really begins a long, long time ago in a faraway galaxy where
there were no personal computers, no mobile phones, no internet, nobody
had ever heard of AIDS, the population of Venezuela did not reach 14
million people and there were roads in good condition through which
groups of biker friends could ride to places like Merida, Cata bay, and
the valleys of the Tuy. The BMW R100RS had just arrived to the market.
One of these had been assembled in November 1977 and purchased by the
undersigned from Motolandia in January 1978. When I left for the U.S. in
May 1978 on an Ayacucho scholarship, I took along my good memories, my
ilusions for the future and my R100RS.

Como la moto era llamativa y atraia atencion, tuve la suerte de conocer a una gringa simpatica de nombre Elizabeth.El destino quiso que nos convirtieramos en compañeros de vida y ya con mi Gringa y mi moto tenia suficiente para ser feliz/ Since the bike attracted a lot of attention, I was lucky enough to meet a nice gringa named Elizabeth. Fate brought us together as life companions and with my Gringa and my bike I had everything I needed to be happy.

Regrese a Venezuela en septiembre de 1980, la moto llego poco despues y la Gringa vino de visita en diciembre y se mudo definitivamente en julio de 1981. / I returned to Venezuela in September 1980, the bike arrived shortly thereafter and the Gringa came to visit in December; she completed her move in July 1981.

Las condiciones en Venezuela comenzaban a deteriorarse ya a principios de los años 80 y se hacia cada vez mas dificil organizar buenos paseos en moto. La Gringa y yo nos casamos en 1982 y el unico paseo de importancia lo hicimos en diciembre de 1983 a Merida./ Conditions, both sociopolitical and roads/safety started to deteriorate in the early 80's. It became increasingly difficult to organize good rides. The Gringa and I got married in 1982 and the only significant ride took place in December 1983, when we went to Merida.

Luego de este paseo, la moto se quedo practicamente sin utilizar durante los siguientes 27 años. Durante este periodo, nos mudamos 10 veces y en 1991 tuvo lugar el episodio mas importante de nuestra vida, que fue el nacimiento de nuestro hijo Aparicio Carlos./ After this ride, the bike remained practically unused for the following 27 years; we moved houses 10 times and the most important event in our lives, which was the birth of our son Aparicio Carlos, took place in 1991

Luego de este periodo de inactividad, fue justamente Aparicio Carlos quien me incito a restaurar la moto, lo cual llevamos a cabo entre 2009 y 2010. La moto fue oficialmente matriculada en Luxemburgo el 13 de agosto de 2010/ Following this period of inactivity, it was precisely Aparicio Carlos who instigated the restoring of the bike, which we did between 2009 and 2010. En
este mismo periodo, Aparicio Carlos obtiene su licencia de moto, la
cual aqui en Luxemburgo impone una limitacion de potencia a 25 KW o
menos durante los dos primeros años. Como tengo tambien un Ducati
Monster 1100, de vez en cuando salimos juntos a riesgo de que nos pare
la policia y sabiendo que en caso de accidente el no estaria cubierto.
No es una situacion comoda y limitamos nuestras excursiones a distancias
cotas y periodos de poco trafico. Hay que encontrar otra solucion pero
por el momento no es urgente, pues lo aceptan en la Universidad de
Dundee para cursar estudios de medicina y durante el primer año estara
tan ocupado que no tendra tiempo de pensar en motos./
During this same period, Aparicio Carlos obtains his first licence
which in Luxembourg carries a limitation to 25KW or less for the first
two years. Since I also have a Ducati Monster 1100, we go out together
sometimes, always at risk of being stopped by the police and knowing
that in case of accident, he is not covered. It is not a comfortable
situation, and we limit our excursions to short distances and periods of
low traffic. We must find another solution but for the moment the
matter is not urgent since he is accepted at the University of Dundee to
study medicine and during the first year he will be so busy that there
will be no time to think about motorcycles.

Compartimos la moto y pagamos por dos numeros de entrada asi que pude yo tambien practicar un poco./We shared the bike and paid for two entry places so I was also able to enjoy practicing.
Asi que en octubre 2010 tengo el Ducati para moto de sport y distancias cortas y la recien restaurada R100RS para distancias largas. Ahora me hace falta encontrar compañeros de viaje y rutas interesantes./ So, as of October 2010, I have the Ducati for sportand short distances and the recently-restored R100RS for longer rides. I now need to find travel companions and interesting itineraries.
Hacia el final del año tengo la oportunidad de adquirir a un precio muy bajo una RT que serviria solo como fuente de repuestos. Como parte de la negociacion viene tambien una R45 con la cual no se que hacer. El Catire Montes me dice que estas motos "no son interesantes". Esta conversacion tiene lugar cuando lo fuimos a visitar en Alicante./Towards the end of the year, I have an opportunity to purchase at a very low price an RT which would be good only as a source of spares; along with it comes an R45 that I have no idea of what to do with. Catire Montes tells me that these bikes "are not interesting" during a conversation we had when we came to visit him and Juana in Alicante.

A pesar de lo que dice el Catire, se me ocurre que tal vez seria una idea restaurar la R45 junto con Aparicio Carlos, como proyecto de padre e hijo y luego darsela a el ya que esta moto cumple justamente con el requisito de los 25KW. Contare esta historia en un posting separado./Despite what Catire says, it occurs to me that perhaps it would be a good idea to restore the R45 together with Aparicio Carlos and then give him this bike, since it just meets the requirement for maximum power of 25KW. This story will follow in a separate post.
